The School Day

The school gates open to parents at 07.00 each morning. We encourage all children to arrive before 07.45 to start the first lesson. Parents can collect children from their classes at the end of each day between 12.15 – 12.30. After school supervision until 14.30 will be provided for children who have registered for the Late Club.

Uniform & Equipment

The wearing of the correct school uniform is closely monitored by staff at all times, in order to maintain our high standards.

Children in KG and PKG must come to school in the correct uniform and suitable, plain, black shoes, not boots. Children should wear their PE uniform on PE/Games days. The children are assigned to one of four House teams: England (yellow), Ireland (green), Scotland (blue) and Wales (red).

Parents are requested to buy a T-shirt in the colour of their child’s House team. Creche children will wear a TSK tracksuit in winter and the TSK shorts and T-shirt in summer.

The Creche T-shirt is yellow. For ease, all items of uniform are sold in packs containing everything your child will need for their school year. These packs are available throughout the year from the Royal Scot shop.

Curriculum

TSK implements The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum. We follow the UK Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS), which is based on the principle that young children learn best when they are engaged in fun and stimulating active play activities.

Carefully structured and planned play helps children understand the world and to develop socially and emotionally. We believe that having fun with friends and their teacher really does give them a head start in life.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum encompasses seven areas of learning to ensure children will develop emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children will develop self-confidence and independence alongside social skills such as the ability to take turns and to share. Qualities of honesty, kindness, thoughtfulness and fair play are strongly promoted.

Communication and Language

Many of our children have English as a Second Language, so we make communication and language development a curriculum priority. In the Kindergarten classes, we develop children’s speaking and listening as well as early reading and writing skills. Role play, stories, rhymes and poems are all used to encourage a growing English vocabulary.

Physical Development

Every day the children take part in varied activities, both indoors and outdoors, which help children to develop physical control. As well as twice weekly lessons with our specialist PD teacher, the children also have daily access to the Jungle Gym, trikes and bikes and hoops and balls.

Literacy

We use a wide range of books to foster an interest in reading and children are encouraged to experiment with mark making to develop the first stages of writing. When they are ready the children will be introduced to a programme of letter sounds and shapes called Jolly Phonics. Their introduction to phonics is through the scheme Letters and Sounds from the Primary National Strategy of England and Wales.

Mathematics

The teachers devise daily fun play activities in the classroom to help children learn about number, shape and pattern. They also constantly use real life every day experiences to reinforce mathematical ability.

Understanding the World

Children are encouraged to find out about other people and the world around them. Work in this area of learning provides the foundation for later study of subjects such as science, history, technology and geography. For example, the children will plant seeds and watch them grow, do some cooking, use Information Technology to play computer games or pretend to be a spaceman flying to the moon in our role play area. Curiosity will be stimulated outside school with visits to local places of interest.

Expressive Arts and Design

Children learn how to express themselves creatively through regular art, music, dance and drama activities. They use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways and think about what they want to use things for. They are encouraged to represent their own thoughts and feelings through role play and stories, as well as through physical art activities.

Staff

Our teams possess an excellent range of teaching and nursing qualifications and can offer a wealth of experience in caring for young children.

Our teachers are all native speaking, Early Years specialists. They are supported by a wonderful team of English speaking assistants who are dedicated to looking after the well-being of your child.

Heather Holsgrove is our TSK Principal, who started her role in September 2016. Heather qualified as a Teacher in 2001 and worked in South Wales, UK before moving to Kuwait with her husband and young son in 2009. She spent several years teaching in BSK and was promoted to Reception Year Head before taking the role of Principal at TSK. Therefore, she is very highly qualified as an Early Years leader and practitioner. Heather has 3 children, a Son and daughter at BSK and a young daughter who will be age appropriate for TSK shortly.

Elisabeth Armstrong is our Assistant Head Teacher, who came to Kuwait in 2007 with her husband and their four daughters. The girls have all been students at BSK and one of her daughters teaches here at TSK.  Miss Lis worked as a Crèche / Kindergarten teacher and was Assistant Curriculum Coordinator before being appointed Assistant Head Teacher in The Sunshine Kindergarten.

Professional Development

The teaching team at The Sunshine Kindergarten (TSK) are second to none when it comes to gaining qualifications and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). As Kuwait’s Premier Early Years Centre, it is no surprise that the team want to ensure that they are always up to date with the most relevant innovations and curriculum advances. Volunteers, teachers, teaching assistants and administration staff all attended a course on Support Work in Schools led by Derek Hicks.

The course is run as a series of weekly workshops, during which the learning outcomes are introduced, followed by a number of interactive activities. The learners are then given tasks to complete, leading to assessment. The qualification is subject to rigorous quality assurance set by City & Guilds, the UK’s foremost Awarding Body. The Award in Support Work in Schools is used by most local authorities in the United Kingdom as an induction and route into employment within schools. City & Guilds is the premier vocational education provider for work-related qualifications.

Moreover, this is only the beginning for many of the ladies on the course. Now that they have gained qualifications at the required level, as teachers and support teachers at TSK, many will advance to the next stage.Dedication, perseverance and a strong love of learning ensures that the teaching team at TSK stays one step ahead of the rest.

First Aid & Caring For Your Child

The Sunshine Kindergarten teams are aware that, when working with small children, anything can happen. For this reason we decided that each team in TSK needed to have at least two people who were trained to deal with medical emergencies. We made this a Continuous Professional development (CPD) matter and several ladies headed off to the Al Salam Hospital to take part in their Heartsaver, First Aid with CPR and AED training course.

Now at TSK and its sister school BSK, as well as having fully qualified nurses in each clinic, there are also numerous First Aiders throughout the campus ready and able to take control should the need arise.
